Extracorporeal shock wave therapy in patients with plantar fasciitis. A randomized, placebo-controlled trial with ultrasonographic and subjective outcome assessments

BACKGROUND AND AIM Results of previous studies have been conflicting on the efficacy of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) in the treatment of plantar fasciitis. We evaluated the effects of ESWT on plantar fasciitis in terms of ultrasonographic and subjective evaluations. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this randomized placebo-controlled trial, patients with plantar fasciitis were assigned to ...

Ultrasound-guided extracorporeal shock wave therapy for plantar fasciitis: a randomized controlled trial.

CONTEXT Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is increasingly used for plantar fasciitis, but limited evidence supports its use. OBJECTIVE To determine whether ultrasound-guided ESWT reduces pain and improves function in patients with plantar fasciitis. DESIGN Double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial conducted between April 1999 and June 2001. SETTING Participants were recrui...

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy for plantar fasciitis: randomised controlled multicentre trial.

OBJECTIVE To determine the effectiveness of extracorporeal shock wave therapy compared with placebo in the treatment of chronic plantar fasciitis. DESIGN Randomised, blinded, multicentre trial with parallel group design. SETTING Nine hospitals and one outpatient clinic in Germany. PARTICIPANTS 272 patients with chronic plantar fasciitis recalcitrant to conservative therapy for at least si...

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy for treatment of plantar fasciitis.

OBJECTIVE To explore the effect of extracorporeal shock wave therapy in patients with chronic plantar faciitis. METHODS The prospective study was conducted at Department of Orhopaedic, Regional Hospital, Limerick, Ireland from January to December 2004 and comprised 70 heels in 62 patients with chronic plantar fasciitis in whom conventional conservative treatment consisting of non-steroidal an...
